Hillside Parish Magazine Extracts February 2002From the RegistersBurials Baptism
February 2002 - a day out with the Children The other Wednesday I accompanied the older children from Knayton School on their trip to York Minster. It was a grand day out! How different children can be in surroundings that differ from the norm. Their enthusiasms and knowledge was interesting, and the love our "teacher" for the day had for the Minster was quite infectious. It's a special place for me anyway, as I was ordained there, unlike current practice, and I also did a day a month in the summer, for a number of years, as orderly chaplain - this brought its own ministry with it. Like a lot of places when you are shown round, your eyes are drawn to the things you may not otherwise see nor look for - you begin to see the place through the eyes of another. We saw all sorts of things in the Minster that I had not seen before - St.Bartholomew being flayed for one - and also experienced the acoustics of the Chapter House (rather like the whispering columns in the old Irish monastery in Clonmcnoise). Sunday by Sunday you could say the preacher tries to do the same - see something hopefully familiar, e.g The Gospel, through the eyes of another, and to see Life through the eyes of Christ. Taking the theme "Seen Through Other Eyes", I propose to use the mid week Lent service to look at what those who penned an epistle saw and wrote. May others open your eyes! T.H.
STAFFING. The Archbishop and the Bishop have agreed to Liz and I job-sharing, and have willingly thrown their weight behind behind backing the scheme and making it possible. Currently, as I write, the idea is being bounced off the PCCs for their support: we have 4 out of 4 official PCCs within 10 days! The proposal is that I work 4 days and Liz works 2 days. This means we still get one stipend between us (so no further cost to the parishes) - the Inland Revenue will then allow Liz her full allowances. This means we should benefit by £1000 p.a. Also, the Diocese will be asked to reinstate Liz's pension in full. Obviously we will both work Sundays so Cowesby will gain a regular mid-morning service per month, as will Kepwick and Kirby Knowle. In due course Liz will also have a regular slot at Boltby. We do not propose to overlap or duplicate each other so Liz would only come to PCCs for items with which she is directly involved. Also, she does have a regular assignment for the Diocese on the selection board for clergy at their conferences and in London. Also, she has just launched a Spiritual Direction Course in the Diocese with Rev. Rachel Benson, and this could expand in the future. My two spare days will be spent in the studio as there is an increasing demand to use some of my work. It would be good if some sells as well, as exhibitions without a sale are expensive, to say nothing of insurance costs and theft ....!!
