October 2005 - "A Harvest of one's own response" Having
done variations on "Sculpture, Prayer and Scripture" for various
groups over the last few months, the impetus is still picking up. What is
exciting is the response of individuals and their dialogue as a group.
This is because the sculpture achieves the objects of the exercise in
getting people to use, refer to, explore and work from the Bible - and of
encouraging debate and discussion. As a result we have picked up on
sexuality and morality from nudes, ethics, in some cases, from individual
portrait busts, the state of the church from busts of clergy, and of
course on art and how to produce it and show it. I'm happy to say,
in passing, that the book Liz and I did on the subject got a very good
review, with the reviewer adding that it was possible to do the same
exercise with any 3D object. It is interesting that the more we explore
God's word in scripture, and hear it, the more our faith and its
application to daily life opens up. Many issues can have new light thrown
on them from biblical perspective as at the very least we can stand back
and be more objective. There is a story going round that some date
stones, dating at least from before its fall in 73 AD and therefore at
some 2000 years old, found at Masada have been planted and have struck.
These take about 30 years to mature and would be original stock to
Palestine, as opposed to what was imported from California to replace a
long lost indigenous species. Rather as Jesus told parables to enable his
word to take root, so this is a parable reflecting our need to extract
God's words from their root, the Bible. They may be old and may take a
lifetime to mature, but they make life worth living and feed us like the
dates. So if sculpture also generates a response or an interest, and it
becomes a statement or an illustration of Biblical truth then well and
good. Grist to the mill! Our response to His Word is God's Harvest. Best
wishes,
