November 2006 - The Muslim World and UsIt was a great treat to have
Professor Haleh Afshar to speak to us in Thirlby. She really enjoyed herself and
gave us a good perspective on Women: The Muslim Faith and the Western World. It
perhaps opened our eyes to fresh perspectives and how people make choices,
express their identity and like the extreme options of their religion despite a
lack of emphasis on such matters in the Koran. They can be as diverse as us
Christians! It was particularly good that Philip Lewis had done some groundwork
for us in Lent. Next Lent, 7th or 14th March, we have as speaker Hamid Murshid,
who is assistant to the director, Dr.Mohammad Elmi, of the Islamic College of
Advanced Studies, Willesden, London. I hope he takes our dialogue, our
understanding and our appreciation and support of our own faith and culture a
little further.
Advent starts with December and we anticipate what lies
ahead. Enjoy what is coming and may your faith enhance it and be enhanced.
